Chai Bookmark
According to The Jewish Daily Forward, its use as an amulet originates in 18th century Eastern Europe. Chai as a symbol goes back to medieval Spain. Letters as symbols in Jewish culture go back to the earliest Jewish roots. Chai is the Hebrew word for “life”. Chai, made from the eighth and tenth letters of the alpha-bet, ads up to eighteen, a number imbued whit magical properties through the ages. This piece is adapted from a design by Jerusalem artist Archie Granot.
